Last month, one of my friend, Bejoalan, foreshadowed about the coming of Xiaomi Notebook which now it has come true. Introduced in Beijing on July 27th 2016, the compact computer is called Mi Notebook Air. This the first laptop product of Xiaomi which previously has produced many other high-tech devices from smartphone, tablet PC, bicycle, drone, powerbank, spy cam, action cam, and even air purifier. But what’s so good about this laptop anyway? What key specifications this laptop is equipped and what how much it is priced will be explained after the jump.
It might be true that people call Xiaomi as the Apple from Asia. Similar to Apple’s laptop that named its laptop product with the “Air” extension, Xiaomi has also named its laptop the same way. Mi Notebook Air, that what it is called, has similar but not the same looks as Macbook Air. Yet, it is better at certain points. In terms of dimension, Xiaomi “Air” laptop is thinner than that Apple has.
There are two variants of Mi Notebook Air which have some discrepancies in terms of its size and hardware specifications planted under the hood. Let’s go through each of them below.
13.3-inch Mi Notebook Air
Specs-wise, the 13.3-inch version comes powered with 6th Generation of Intel i5 processor (Dualcore CPUs, 4 threads, clocked @2.7GHz), 8GB DDR4 RAM, 256GB PCIe SSD, and NVIDIA GeForce 940MX dedicated GPU (Graphic Processing Unit). Unlike what rumors said last year, the notebook doesn’t come with Core i7. However, the 6th Gen Intel i5 CPU if combined together with GefOrce 940 MX GPU will result to sleek and unbeatable performance. It is a real ultrabook monster.
For your information, 6th Generation of Intel i5 processor is a 64-bit processor manufactured with 14nm fabrication. The CPU features SSE4.1/4.2, AVX 2.0, 2 cores, 4 threads, 15W TDP, 34.1 GB/s max memory bandwidth, and built-in Intel HD Graphics 520. Furthermore, GeForce 940MX is a mobile GPU chipset produced by world’s well-known GPU manufacturer. The GeForce 940MX features some high-end technologies including CUDA (enables dramatic increases in computing performance by harnessing the power of the graphics processing unit (GPU), Optimus (NVIDIA Optimus technology intelligently optimizes notebook PC, providing the outstanding graphics), PhysX (to create incredible effects and scenes filled with dynamic destruction, particle based fluids, and life-like animation), GPU Boost 2.0 (to extract every ounce of computing power from graphics cards, maximizing frame rates in each and every game), DirectX 12 (DX12) compatible (to enable new visual effects and rendering techniques for more lifelike gaming).
On top of that, this lightweight ultrabook (weighing only 1.28 kg) is equipped with powerful battery capable to provide the laptop with 9.5 hours of juice. Moreover, the battery is featured with ultraquick charging technology allowing its users to obtain 50% of juice in only 30 minutes.
This laptop comes shipped with genuine Windows 10 Home edition – unlike what it has been predicted to run one of Linux distros. The laptop also comes with all contemporary ports including HDMI, USB Type-C, USb 3.0, and 3.5mm headphone jack.
In terms of form factor and design, Mi Notebook Air has dimension of 309.6 mm x 210.9 mm x 14.8 mm which is 13% thinner than Macbook Air 13.3″. The best part of it, the laptop is manufactured based on borax anodized technology giving it all-metal body polished with high degree of color unity. Unlike what people expected before that it would have Mi logo at the front, the laptop has no logo instead it inherits logoless exterior concept bringing clean minimalistic – but elegant- design.
Let’s take a look at some of its teaser pics :
12.5-inch Mi Notebook Air
Generally, the 12.6-inch version of Mi Notebook Air inherits similar key specifications except following ones :
- Powered with Intel Core M3 CPU instead of i5.
- 12.9 mm at its thinnest point.
- Weighing only 1.07 kg.
- 4GB RAM and 128GB SSD
- 12.5-inch full 1080 HD screen.
- 11.5 hours battery power.
Price and availability
Initial price of Mi Notebook Air 12.5-inch version is 3499 yuan (~ $525) whereas its 13.3-inch version is 4999 yuan (~ $750). Xiaomi will sell both ultrabook variants starting on August 2nd 2016 through its online mall at Mi.com website.
