How to Flash MIUI 7.2.5 Multilanguage ROM on Locked Mi 4S

Do you want to unofficially unlock bootloader of Mi 4S and eventually to root or may be to install custom ROM on it? Perhaps you just want to replace existing stock MIUI ROM with another one having multi-language packs? Are you wondering how you can flash TWRP and root your Mi 4S without having to request bootloader unlock permission? This could be your answer if you did the steps correctly. In this article you will see a workaround to flash TWRP and to root Mi 4S with locked bootloader by flashing custom MIUI 7 ROM. This method may also unbrick bricked Mi 4S without having to wait days for unlock permission. Yeah I know, you might be wondering of how we can flash custom ROM while the phone’s bootloader is still locked. Well, anything can be possible if we knew the way. Main Objectives:

  1. Install Multilingual MIUI ROM (and unlocking bootloader unofficially)
  2. Install TWRP Recovery
  3. Flash SuperSU to gain root

Requirements

Prerequisites

  1. Please make full backup of all important files of data and store it in safe place like your computer’s disk. Of course you can simply skip this if your phone is in bricked state since you can’t do it.
  2. Install properly Mi Flash tool onto your computer. How to install Mi Flash tool.
  3. Extract MIUI v7.2.5.0 Multilanguage ROM you have downloaded. Use either Winrar or 7zip to decompress the file. Upon extraction, you will have many files including those of MIUI ROM and several useful tools.
  4. You may need to firstly recharge your phone so it can have at least 60% battery juice.
  5. Please also bear in mind that we hold no responsibility of any damage or hardbrick risks that could happen as a result of following thus tutorial. Proceed carefully and responsibly.

Flashing MIUI Multilanguage ROM

Step 1 – Grab your Mi 4s device, turn it off and put it in Fastboot mode. Doing so is easy: while your phone is off, press and hold Volume Down (-) and Power buttons simultaneously until you see MIUI Bunny Fastboot logo.

Step 2 – Now your phone is in Fastboot mode. Take the USB cable you have prepared and connect your phone to your computer using the USB cable.

Step 3 – Launch Windows Explorer and go to the location of where you have extracted MIUI v7.2.5.0 Multilanguage ROM.

Step 4 – Find and double-click “Mi4S EDL.cmd” file to launch the script. Press any key on your keyboard to continue the process of putting your phone into Emergency Download Mode (EDL).

Step 5 – Once your phone is in EDL mode, install QualcommHS-USB QDLoader 9008 Driver.

Step 6 – Next, open up MiFlash tool you have installed. Click the “Browse” button and locate the MIUI Multilanguage ROM you have installed (point it to “images” folder – see screenshot)

Step 7 – You may need to click the “Refresh” button and you’ll see your device displayed in the table. Once the MiFlash tool can recognize your device, click the “Flash” button to start flashing the ROM into your phone.

Step 8 – Now the flashing process will take place. Just wait for it to fully complete. Once done, you will see a message saying “The operation completed successfully” and the progress bar is fully green.

Step 9 – Disconnect your phone from computer and turn it on by pressing Power button until it vibrates. The initial booting process usually takes longer than usual (~5 minutes).

At this point you have had MIUI 7.2.5.0 Multilanguage ROM installed on your phone and it’s bootloader has also been unlocked.

Flashing TWRP Recovery

Now let’s install Team Win Recovery Project on your Mi 4S.

Step 1 – Turn your Mi4S off and put it in Fastboot mode. Doing so is easy : while your phone is off, press and hold Volume Down (-) and Power buttons simultaneously until you see MIUI Bunny Fastboot logo.

Step 2 – Now your phone is in Fastboot mode. Take the USB cable and connect your phone to your computer again using the USB cable.

Step 3 – Launch Windows Explorer and go to the location of where you have extracted MIUI v7.2.5.0 Multilanguage ROM.

Step 4 – Find and double-click “Mi4S TWRP.cmd” file to launch the script. Executing the script will install TWRP v2.8.7.0 on Mi 4S. Just follow and do the on-screen instruction.

Reboot to normal mode once you have it installed.

Rooting Mi 4S

Step 1 – Now transfer / copy the downloaded SuperSU .zip file into the root directory of your phone’s internal storage.

Step 2 – Reboot your phone into TWRP : turn off your phone >> press and hold Volume Up (+) and Power button simultaneously. Alternatively, you can do that by opening Updater app >> tap on three dots at top right-hand corner >> choose “Reboot into Recovery”.

Step 3 – In main menu of TWRP, choose “Install” >> locate the downloader SUperSU .zip file >> do the “Swipe to install” action.

Step 4 – Just wait for TWRP to fully flashing SuperSU package.

Step 5 – That’s it. Once done, you may reboot your phone into Normal mode.

Step 6 – You will notice a new app namely SuperSU installed. Launch it up and it may ask you to confirm updating binaries and so on. Just do it.

That’s all and have fun with your Mi 4S device which is rooted and it has unlocked bootloader.

You can install Root Checker app from Play Store to verify the root access you have obtained.

Furthermore, if you want, you can flash any compatible custom ROM via TWRP. Many users prefer to install MIUI ROM Xiaomi.eu build (usually it is multilanguage and bloatware-free).
