How to Flash MIUI Fastboot ROM on Mi 4S with Locked Bootloader

Mi4S Flash Fastboot Locked Bootloader

One of biggest reason why users of Xiaomi device want to unlock their phone’s bootloader is to re-install MIUI Fastboot ROM. Easiest way to install MIUI is basically through Recovery mechanism but that can be done if your phone is bricked. Nevertheless, the easiest way to and the most common way to fix bricked Xiaomi device is reinstalling its MIUI through Fastboot interface using MIUI Fastboot ROM. Unfortunately, it won’t be possible to flash an MIUI Fastboot ROM if your device still has locked bootloader. Normally, you have to firstly request for official permission to unlock bootloader from MIUI Team which will take days. The question is, can we simply flash MIUI Fastboto ROM without unlocked bootloader? The answer is “Yes,” especially for Mi 4S.

In this article you will see a workaround to flash MIUI Fastboot ROM on Mi 4S having locked bootloader and recover it from bricked state. Unbrick your Mi4S and recover from bootloop even if you have no official bootloader unlock permission with this trick. This is just a backup plan for those Mi 4S users who accidentally bricked their device while they have no permission to unlock their device. However, it is better to proceed with normal Fastboot ROM flashing process if somehow your Mi 4S already has an unlocked bootloader – and do not proceed with this tutorial.

Step 1 – If your phone is still in normal state (not bricked), firstly make backup of your important files and data.

Step 2 – Disable driver signature enforcement in your PC. You can do that by pressing Windows button + i on keyboard to reveal the Settings page. From there you can choose Update & Security >> Recovery >> Advanced startup >> Restart now. Wait a moment for your computer to restart. Next, go to Troubleshoot >> Advanced options >> Startup settings >> Restart. Once your computer restarts, now choose Disable driver signature enforcement which is option number 7. See the video below for more details :

Step 3 – If your phone is normal, please enable USB debugging first. Just go to Settings>>About phones >> tap on the MIUI Version 7 times. That will activate Developer Options. Now go to Settings >> Additional Settings>>Developer Options >> enable USB Debugging.

Step 4 – Install MiFlash Tool onto your computer.

Step 5 – Extract Minimal Fastboot ADB files using Winzip or Winrar.

Step 6 – Reboot your phone into Emergency Download Mode following my previous guide. Read – how to put Mi 4S into EDL mode.

Use either the ADB or Fastboot method in putting your phone into EDL mode. However if your phone is bricked, use the key combination method.

Step 7 – Connect your phone (while it is in EDL mode) to your computer – if you haven’t done it yet.

Step 8 – Extract Qualcomm QDLoader USB Drivers. You can read and follow my previous tutorial on how to install Qualcomm QDLoader driver (see step 9 – 15).

Flashing MIUI Fastboot ROM

Step 1 – Extract the downloaded MIUI Fastboot ROM package using either WinRAR or 7zip tool. It is easier to extract it at root directory of any drive in your computer (e.g: drive C:\ or D:\). The most important thing is to make sure you don’t extract it in a folder with space in its name. For instance: D:\ROM\

Step 2 – Launch up Mi Flash tool.

Step 3 – Click the “Browse” button of Mi Flash tool (or “Select” in Mi Flash Beta) then locate the folder in which you extracted MIUI Fastboot ROM.
