That’s a pretty great achievement indicating how popular the large-screen device is. Firstly announced on May 10, 2016, the Android phone boasts 6.44 inches screen along with decent Qualcomm chipset and multicores processor planted under the hood. Mi Max is available in three different variants: 3GB RAM/32GB ROM, 3GB RAM / 64GB ROM, and the massive one with 4GB RAM / 128 GB ROM. For you who are so lucky in any case to have this awesome smartphone on hands, this article will show you how to install Play Store properly on Mi Max.

This article will show you 3 methods from easiest one to the most effective one to install Play Store and all necessary Google Apps (GApps) services on Mi Max running MIUI 8. We really hope this such ultimate guide will really help you getting Play Store installed properly without any issue on your phone. Mi Max runs MIUI 8 based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow by default. These methods will also work on MIUI Developer ROM.

Method #1 – GApps for Marshmallow

Use this method only if :

  • Your phone is running MIUI or any custom ROM based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
  • You want the easiest way to have Play Store installed on your phone.
  • You don’t want to flash TWRP.

Step 1 – Enable installation from unknown sources in your phone. Of course you have to firstly enable Developer Options in MIUI Settings. Follow this sequence :

  1. Go to Settings >> About Phone >> tap MIUI version 7 times quickly. This will activate “Developer Options.”
  2. Go to Settings >> Additional Setting >> Developer Options >> Allow Mock Location >> and enable it.
  3. Go to Settings Settings >> Additional Settings >> Privacy >> enable “Unknown Sources”

Step 2 – Download and install ES File Explorer (optional but useful).

Step 3 – Download GApps for MIUI Marshmallow into your phone’s internal storage. The file is usually downloaded into “Download” folder.

Step 4 – Open up ES File Explorer and go to the location of where you’ve downloaded Gapps .zip file. Extract the file using ES File Explorer (long press the file name to display more options). However, if you don’t have ES File Explorer then you might have to download the file in your computer first and extract it using Winzip followed by transferring all the .apk files into your phone.

You’ll then get 6 different folders named :

  1. Google Account Manager
  2. Google Services Framework
  3. Google Play Service
  4. Google Calendar Sync
  5. Google Contacts Sync
  6. Google Play Store

Step 5 – Please then install each of those apps one by one sequentially from app no. 1 to no. 6.

Step 6 – Once done, it is better to reboot your phone to make sure all new changes are applied.

Method #2 – Gapps Installer tool

Please use this second method only if :

  • The above first method did not work for you.
  • You don’t mind to use your PC to help you installing GApps.
  • Or, if you don’t want to install TWRP.
  • You want to install Play Store and many other gapps automatically. Included Google Apps: Google package installer, Google Calendar, Google Contacts, Play Store, GMail, Google Plus, Google Search, Hangouts, YouTube, Google Maps, Chrome, and so on.

Please read the whole steps at first prior doing it. Are you ready? Let’s go to the steps:

Step 1 – Make sure you have USB ADB Drivers installed properly on your PC. If not, simply download ADB Setup installer file and install it first.

Step 2 – Download the GApps autoinstaller package into your computer and use Winzip or Winrar to extract its content. You will then get a file called “Google Apps.exe” and a folder called “package” containing all Google Apps .apk files.

Step 3 – On your phone, launch up Settings >> and go to Developer Options >>Security Apps >> tap on the Setting symbol from the top right bar >> then switch off Install from USB option.

Step 4 – Connect your phone into computer using its USB cable.

Step 5 – Launch up Windows Explorer and navigate to the location of extracted Gapps Autoinstaller package.

Step 6 – Finally, simply double-click on “Google Apps.exe” file to execute it.

Step 7 – You’ll see something like what in the picture below. Press any key on your keyboard to start installing Gapps on your Mi Max.

The process may take awhile. Enjoy the newly installed Gapps.

Method #3 – Open GApps

Please use this second method only if :

  • The above two methods did not work for you.
  • You don’t mind to Flash TWRP – the coolest custom recovery for MIUI devices on earth.
  • Or, if you have TWRP installed.
  • You want to install Play Store (and required services) with few other additional GApps.

Please read the whole steps at first prior doing it. Are you ready? Let’s go to the steps:

Step 1 – Flash TWRP on your phone. You do not have to root your phone as long as TWRP is installed then it’s ok to proceed.

Generally, installing custom recovery means you have to firstly unlock your phone’s bootloader unless you knew another way of unofficial bootloader unlock method.

Step 2 – Download Open Gapps package into your phone. Check in your device Settings of which Android version the MIUI ROM installed on your device is. Make sure you run Android 6.0 / 6.0.1 Marshmallow then download OpenGApps package:

Step 3 – Reboot your phone into TWRP Recovery mode. You can achieve that using one of these ways :

  • Turn off your phone. While your phone is off, press and hold Volume Up (+) button and Power button simultaneously until it reboot into recovery.
  • Via Updater app. Open up Updater app (usually in Tools folder) >> tap on three dots (…) at the top right-hand corner of the screen >> choose Reboot into recovery.

Step 4 – Once you are in TWRP, choose “Install“.

Step 5 – Locate the location of where you have downloaded OpenGapps package (.zip file).

Please ignore the folder location and the file name above. It’s just for illustration.

Step 6 – Now do the “Swipe to confirm flash“. Just wait for it to complete the flashing process.

Step 7 – Finally choose “Reboot” once the Open Gapps flashing process is done.

That’s all. Google Apps, including Play Store, are now installed on your phone.

Step 8 – Do not forget to sign in using your Gmail / Google account.
