Xiaomi announced in October of 2016 that it would be releasing a Xiaomi Mi Note 2 and then publicly released photos of the Xiaomi Mi Note 2. This announcement was followed up with the release Xiaomi Mi Note 2 in November 2016. The early looks and reviews of the Xiaomi Note 2 suggests that it is a game-changer.

For the Xiaomi Mi Note 2 to be taken seriously, it must be a better option than the iPhone 7. The iPhone 7 is the gold standard among smartphones. For a new player in the smartphone marketplace to be taken seriously, it must show that it has better features than the iPhone 7

Curved Edge Screen

Xiaomi is discarding the traditional flat screen and jumping on the curved edge screen train with the Xiaomi Mi Note 2. It looks like the curved edge screen is the wave of the future. Users of the dual-curved or curved edge screen already understand the benefits this type of screen provide. Given that Samsung and Huawei both have smartphones with dual edged screens, one might wonder if the days of the flat screen smartphone are limited.

Advantages to the Xiaomi Mi Note 2’s Curved Edge Screen:

  • Wrapped screen provides a better streaming video experience.

  • Touch buttons can be accessed on the sides of the phone uncluttering the home screen.

  • Higher screen to body of the phone ratio.

  • High-definition display.

The Xiaomi Mi Note 2 features an AMOLED capacitive touchscreen. This is a hybrid display technology that combines an active matrix backplane from a traditional TFT (thin film transistor) display with an OLED (organic light emitting diode) display. The TFT display helps improve image quality and combining it with OLED leads to quality image display.

The resolution of the Xiaomi Mi Note 2 is 1080 x 1920 pixels. This provides 386 ppi (pixels per inch) pixel density.

IPhone 7

The iPhone 7 features a flat screen. While the flat screen does not provide as much function as the curved edge screen, Apple has spent a lot of time and energy enhancing the screens resolution and the screen 3D touch.

With the latest iOS operating system (10), the 3D digital touch capabilities provided by Apple are better than other smartphone competitors. Working with the 3D digital touch capabilities, the retina HD display features wide color.

The Retina HD display screen of the 4.7-inch iPhone 7 has a 1334-by-750 or “1 megapixel” resolution. This is a quarter million more pixels than iPhone SE, but at the same 326ppi pixel density as the SE and 6s. The Retina HD display of the 5.5-inch iPhone 7 Plus has a 1920-by-1080 or “2 megapixel” resolution which is the same 401ppi pixel density as the iPhone 6s Plus.

The iPhone 7 comes in two sizes which means there at two different screen sizes for users. The iPhone 7 is 4.7 inches and has 1334 x 750-pixel resolution. The iPhone 7s is 5.5 inches and has 1920 x 1080-pixel resolution.

Size

Xiaomi Mi Note 2:

The screen size of the Xiaomi Mi Note 2 is 5.7 inches or 14.48 centimeters. This is a striking 74.2% screen to body ratio. Also that is a higher ratio than the iPhone 7 plus which only has 67.7% screen to body ratio.

While this screen is not the largest screen size available on the market, the 2K video content should make up for the smaller size.

IPhone 7:

The iPhone 7 is 4.7 inches, and the iPhone 7s is 5.5 inches.

Body:

Xiaomi Mi Note 2:

The Xiaomi Mi Note 2 is 6.15 x 3.04 x .30 inches or 156.2 x 77.3 x 7.6 mm. It weighs in a 5.86 ounces or 166 grams. The Xiaomi Mi Note 2 is also dual SIM capable; both nano SIM and dual standby.

One of the other physical features is an elongated home button.

The Xiaomi Mi Note 2 has a non-removable Lithium Ion 4070 mAh battery. Users have reported being able to use the phone for over twelve hours and still having fifty percent of the battery life left. Even if the battery optimization options are not turned on, the battery life is still greater than most of the smartphones on the market today.

Also the battery has fast charging capabilities. The Xiaomi Mi Note 2 has the Quick Charge 3.0 feature which allows it to charge eighty-three percent in thirty minutes.

The Xiaomi Mi Note 2 has an external speaker and a 3.5 millimeter headphone jack. The jack is 24-bit/192kHz audio. The jack also provides active noise cancellation with a dedicated microphone.

iPhone 7:

Apple has introduced a new A10 Fusion Application Processor which provides a 40 percent leap in CPU power over the iPhone 6’s A9. Apple actually promotes the A10 as being up to two times faster than the original iPhone 6. Apple is also saying the GPU used by the iPhone 7 is up to 50 percent faster. This could be up to a three times improvement over the iPhone 6.

In addition, the iPhone 7’s GPU subsystem provides power efficiency, using a third less of the power of the A9 GPU or half as much as the A8 graphics engine used in the iPhone 6. This give the iPhone 7 the longest battery life rating ever for an iPhone. The iPhone 7 is two hours longer than the iPhone 6s, and the iPhone 7 Plus model lasts an extra hour longer than the 6s Plus. The iPhone battery increase comes even with a boost to 3GB of RAM for iPhone 7 Plus.

Winner: Xiaomi Mi Note 2 – the Quick Charge 3.0 gives this phone the slight edge

Memory:

Xiaomi Mi Note 2:

While the Xiaomi Mi Note 2 does not have a card slot allowing for external memory to be added, it does offer two types of internal memory option. The first is 4 gigabytes of RAM and 64 gigabytes of storage memory and the second is 6 gigabytes of RAM and 128 gigabytes of storage memory. It is up to the user to decide which memory option will work best for them.

IPhone 7:

On past models of the iPhone, iOS has worked with 1GB of RAM. This was expanded to 2GB on both iPhone 6s models. The increase to 3GB of RAM for the iPhone 7 shows Apple is all in on the efficiency of iOS 10 and its A10 Fusion chip. The additional gig of RAM shows the iPhone wants to run more powerful software and third party apps.

In addition to the increase of RAM in the iPhone 7, both the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus models come with double their NAND storage capacities. 32GB of storage is the starting point with the option of adding an additional 128GB and 256GB. Also NAND flash memory doesn’t need any power to store its data, which means the increase in memory does not impact the battery life.

Winner: Draw – the Xiaomi Mi Note 2 has more RAM, but the iPhone 7 has more storage memory options.

Features:

Xiaomi Mi Note 2:

The Xiaomi Mi Note 2 has six sensors. The elongated home button has a fingerprint sensor, and also an accelerometer, a gyro sensor, proximity sensor, compass and barometer.

The Xiaomi Mi Note 2 has multiple messaging capability as well. It is SMS (threaded view), MMS, email, push mail, and instant messaging enabled.

The web browser is HTML5 enabled.

IPhone 7:

The iPhone 7 is water resistant.

iPhone 7 comes with new built-in stereo speakers, one in the base of the phone and the other in the earpiece. For the user this means twice the volume for listening to music, watching videos, playing games or using the speakerphone. The iPhone 7 also has built-in audio is comparable to a basic external Bluetooth speaker.

The iPhone 7 also does not have a headphone jack. The iPhone is pushing toward wireless headphones.

The Xiaomi Mi Note 2 has Bluetooth capabilities, compatible with v4.2, A2DP and LE.

The Xiaomi Mi Note 2 is also GPS enabled working with A-GPS, GLONASS, and BDS.

While the Xiaomi Mi Note 2 is not radio enabled, it does have the NFC chip which does allow for certain tap and go services.

The Xiaomi Note 2 also has an infrared port allowing for an exchange of data with other phones, and has a Type C 1.0 reversible connector.

iPhone 7:

Apple supports 23 LTE bands worldwide, making it perfect for roaming the globe. If a carrier supports LTE Advanced, the new iPhone 7 models can support mobile speeds of up to 450Mbps. This is greater than the standard LTE service which has speeds up to 40Mbps, and wideband LTE which has speeds up to 150Mbps service.

AT&T has been using LTE Advanced networks, and Verizon also has LTE Advanced coverage in 450 cities. However even a 40Mbps LTE service delivers a solid experience for mobile users.

The iPhone 7 supports WiFi 802.11ac which is the latest standard used in AirPort and Time Capsule base stations. The iPhone 7 also has multiple antenna MIMO technology that supports wireless speeds of up to 866MHz which is twice the speed of iPhone 6.

Camera:

Xiaomi Mi Note 2:

The Xiaomi Mi Note 2 has camera capabilities similar to other smartphones currently on the market, but what makes the Xiaomi Mi Note 2 different is that it does not have the trendy dual camera set-up. The camera on the Xiaomi Note 2 has 22.5 megapixels, f/2.0, gyro EIS (electronic image stabilization), phase detection auto-focus, dual-LED providing more flash. Also the proprietary low light and long exposure technology pioneered by Xiaomi is included.

Also featured on the Xiaomi Mi Note 2 camera is a ½.6-inch sensor, geo-tagging, touch-focus, face detection, HDR (high dynamic range imaging), and panorama capabilities. The video capabilities are 2160p@30fps and 1080p@30fps.

Are you a fan of selfies? The Xiaomi Mi Note 2 was built with selfie taking in mind. The front side of the Xiaomi Mi Note 2 has an 8 Megapixel shooter with a Sony IMX268 sensor. This shooter is not a fixed focus module (unlike most smartphone cameras available), and it also comes with autofocus. The Xiaomi Mi Note 2 has an aperture of f/2.0 as well, and improved group selfies and Beautify 3.0, which are features unique to Xiaomi smartphones.

IPhone 7:

The iPhone comes with an enhanced ISP, and the electronic eyes of iPhone 7 have been built wider to let in more light. The back camera has an aperture of f/1.8 on its 12-megapixel sensor. The iPhone 7 rear camera also has a new six element lens. When combined with the larger aperture, the sensor gets up to 50 percent more light, which provides a better low light image capture.

Both the iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus also have Optical Image Stabilization (OIS). OIS uses micro-motors to adjust the lens position. This counterbalances the movements of the users hands when taking a photo. This lets the iPhone7 use a larger aperture and shoot with exposure times up to three times longer.

The new telephoto lens on iPhone 7 Plus uses an f/2.8 aperture for its own 12 megapixel sensor. The new dual lens system has 2x optical zoom and progressive digital zoom levels that transfers from the standard 1x wide angle lens to the telephoto.

The iPhone 7 shoots 4K video at 30fps (in addition to 1080p video at 60fps or 30fps). The user does have to manually select which mode they want to use from Settings/Photos & Camera. 4K video at 30fps is noticeably sharper in crisp detail, and the 4K video mode works best when avoiding rapid panning of the camera.

Even with four times the pixels, the 4K video only takes up twice as much space as 1080p HD video.

Apple introduced Retina Flash for front facing selfie shots previously. Retina Flash illuminates scenes based on color measurements captured by the camera module, and adds a slight tinge of warmth as needed.

The rear TrueTone flash gets an upgrade with the iPhone 7 that doubles the number of LED elements: two warm amber and two cool white.

Winner: draw. Both smartphones have amazing camera capabilities.

Are you in the market for a new Android smartphone? Are you leary of Samsung’s latest offering because of the recall of the Galaxy Note 7? Now there are other options for Android smartphone users.

Xiaomi has added a lot of new features and upgrades to the Xiaomi Note 2. From the new design with a greater screen to body ratio to the unique camera to the current Android operating system, Xiaomi wants to be considered a major player in the international smartphone space. Since the initial product run of Xiaomi Note 2’s sold out is a single minute, the consumers agree.

However, the iPhone will not go quietly into the night. Depending on the user, the iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus may be a better option than the Xiaomi Mi Note 2. The iPhone 7 does not have quick charging capabilities of the Xiaomi Mi Note 2, but it is waterproof.
